ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Charles Wise ’63 is a political
scientist with a diverse background of expertise that focuses
on government, public law, government organizations, and
democratization in the former Soviet Union. Specifically,
Wise, a professor for Indiana University’s School
of Public and Environmental Affairs, is known for his research
on homeland security, national fire policy, Congress, and
Supreme Court decisions concerning federalism and regulation.
Wise has practical experience serving in the United States
Department of Justice under President Ronald Reagan, first
as Special Assistant for Policy Analysis in the Office of
Legislative Affairs and then as Director of Intergovernmental
Affairs.
Wise is a Fellow for the National Academy of Public Administration
and serves on a panel studying prescribed fires. The panel
was recently responsible for contracting with the U.S. Congress
and the Departments of Agriculture and the Interior to produce
the analysis, “Wildfire Suppression: Strategies for
Containing Costs.”
Wise, a former managing editor of The Public Administration
Review, is a prolific writer and past president of the National
Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.
Wise has been quoted by various media over the course of
his career with the most recent being a Los Angeles Times
article on homeland security.
